All about breast reconstruction

Being told that you have breast cancer can feel absolutely devastating. The disease brings a series of challenges and difficulties for those who experience it. In some cases, a diagnosed woman will undergo a mastectomy to remove all signs of the disease and keep the cancer from spreading to other parts of her body. For some women, having their breasts removed is like removing an important part of themselves. After all, many individuals think of their bodies as something that defines them. When you are suddenly without a major part of it, you might feel lost or overwhelmed. Fortunately, part of recovering from breast cancer is rebuilding, and when it comes to recovering from a mastectomy, many women have the option to replace their natural breasts. While some prefer to keep a flat chest and use removable padding to fill the void, others opt for reconstruction surgery. If you are considering having a procedure done, we would be happy to assist you on your journey. Many of the patients that we see in our New York office report that having a reconstruction surgery helps them feel one step closer to being whole again. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start the process for yourself.

When would you like the procedure to take place?

While some people are eager to have a reconstruction surgery, others feel more comfortable waiting for a spell to mentally prepare for the procedure to take place. Both of these options are completely understandable. We all have unique experiences and reactions to situations, and this is especially true when it comes to recovering from a life-threatening disease like cancer. Take your time, and know that we would be happy to discuss any options you might have as you make your decision.

What kind of material do you want?

Today, there are many types of fillers that look and feel like natural breast tissue. We use both saline and silicone implants in our office, and both have a proven track record of satisfied patients. In some cases, you might not even want to have implants at all. We can discuss all of your options in greater detail to help you make sure you have a solution that you are excited about.

What size would you like to be?

The choice is totally up to you. Some patients feel more comfortable going back to a size that they had before and the mastectomy occurred. Others feel more comfortable with a smaller or larger size. We can work together to discuss what will appear mostly natural and what will best complement your body shape and type. Rest assured that we will not suggest anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Thinking about a breast reconstruction can be a little overwhelming. With all the options out there, there’s quite a bit to consider. You should keep in mind that your reconstruction will take place over the course of several surgeries, but at the end, you’ll have a new physique that can help you complete your recovery process.
