Kybella™ Treatment for Double Chin Offices in Great Neck and Manhttan
Kybella™ (deoxycholic acid) is naturally produced in the body to help absorb fats. Recently, the product has been approved by the FDA as a treatment for adults with moderate to severe fat accumulation below the chin, colloquially known as a double chin. Kybella has not yet been approved for other purposes and must be injected by a trained professional to make sure that all other cells remain healthy and intact. This is because, if improperly administered, Kybella can destroy other kinds of cells, such as skin cells.
Kybella is a cytolytic drug which, when injected into tissue, physically destroys the cell membrane. When properly infected into chin fat, however, the drug destroys fat cells.
Kybella Treatments
The number of treatments necessary varies considerably from patient to patient. Each treatment only takes about 15 minutes and some patients may only require a total of two to three sessions, spaced about a month apart, receiving a series of 12 to 20 injections during each individual treatment.
For other patients, however, the treatment may take longer. Dr. Brian D. Cohen will discuss your most effective options during your consultation about your specific wishes.
Whatever the number of treatment sessions, or injections per treatment session, however, Kybella is highly effective in more than 80% of cases. Most patients are highly satisfied with the cosmetic results.
Possible Side Effects of Kybella
The common side effects of Kybella treatments are temporary and not serious. These include:
- Swelling
- Numbness
- Pain
- Small hard areas at injection sites
A rare, more serious side effect is an injury to the marginal mandibular nerve, the nerve which controls facial expressions, including the smile. This only occurs when injections are administered close to this nerve and only 4 percent of a sample of 5,000 patients experienced this complication. In all of those affected, the problem eventually resolved.
