Brian D. Cohen, MD is a master of his profession with a well-earned reputation for sensitivity and finesse as well as outstanding surgical skill. If you are seeking a fine plastic surgeon in the greater New York area, Dr. Cohen has offices in Great Neck and Manhattan. Faces are the most visible and expressive parts of the body and, as such, show not only our emotions but our age. Facial aging is affected by many factors — heredity, skin type, lifestyle — so some people look older (or younger) than their chronological age. If you fall into the former category and yearn to look as energetic and vital as you feel, several surgical face procedures can make a remarkable difference not only in how you appear to others but in how you view yourself.
Before Scheduling a Face Procedure
Once you meet with Dr. Cohen, he will assess your individual needs and recommend one or more face procedures that will restore youthful tone to the face you show the world. Before scheduling any procedure, he will examine you, take photographs, and require a comprehensive medical history to make sure he is aware of any pre-existing conditions that may affect results or preclude surgery altogether, such as:
- Certain medications
- Smoking
- Alcohol or drug abuse
- History of extreme weight fluctuations
- Blood-clotting problems
- Other disease conditions
He will then explain the procedure(s) to you in detail, and answer any questions you may have. He will also give you specific instructions about how to prepare for the procedure, which will be performed in an outpatient surgical setting under IV sedation or general anesthesia.
Various Face Procedures and Their Goals
Here is a list of face procedures routinely performed by Dr. Brian D. Cohen:
Facelifts
Facelifts provide a fresh, youthful appearance by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscle tissue. By pulling flaps of skins back and removing (and/or redistributing) excess fat on each side of the face, Dr. Cohen is able to give your face the fresh, smooth, sculpted look of a younger person.
Facelifts are designed to improve your appearance by eliminating:
- Sagging cheeks
- Jowls, the excess skin at your lower jawline
- Deepening folds of skin between each side of your nose and the corners of your mouth
Depending on your preferences, Dr. Cohen may perform a traditional, more comprehensive face-lift or a limited (shorter) incision. The results of a facelift are expected to last for about 10 years.
Neck Lifts
Neck lifts, as you would expect, are surgeries that tighten the skin on the neck. Because the neck is an area especially susceptible to signs of aging, neck lifts can make an amazing difference in how old you are perceived to be. During neck lifts, Dr. Cohen smooths and tightens the sagging skin on the neck, removing fat deposits and providing a more toned, youthful appearance. Neck lifts are often performed in conjunction with facelifts so that the refined contours of the neck and face enhance one another.
Blepharoplasty (Eye Lifts)
Eyes are typically the most noticeable feature of the face, particularly because we look into them to make visual and verbal connections. Often, as we age, our eyelids become puffy and tired-looking. Frequently our upper eyelids droop, sometimes asymmetrically, making us appear to be not fully alert, while simultaneously hiding the beauty of our eyes. Blepharoplasty restores the wide-eyed look of youth and revitalizes your face by letting others once again see the color of your eyes.
Browlifts
Browlifts can make a tremendous difference in appearance by smoothing drooping or lined foreheads. Because our brows often reveal fatigue or emotional stress (think “furrowed brow”), renewing the appearance of a smooth brow can make you look pleased or serene, in some cases facilitating conversations and relationships.
Chin Augmentation
So-called “weak” chins are disparaged by our culture, though of course, they have nothing whatever to do with character or courage. Dr. Cohen performs chin augmentation procedures on those who, almost always due to heredity, have chins that detract from an otherwise attractive appearance. By sculpting a stronger, wider, or longer chin, this surgical procedure provides a more balanced facial structure and a more pleasing, vigorous appearance.
Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
When ears are noticeable on the face, it is most often because they detract from facial harmony. Otoplasty typically serves one of two functions: [1] keeping prominent ears from protruding excessively by moving the outer ear (pinna) back closer to the head or [2] reducing the size of large ears. In both cases, otoplasty can make a big difference for individuals who have always been self-conscious (and often teased) about their ears.
Fat Grafting
For those whose faces appear sunken due to aging or extreme weight loss, fat grafting can be a wonderfully restorative procedure. Also known as autologous fat transfer or liposculpture, fat grafting returns a youthful appearance by replacing lost facial volume with fat taken from elsewhere (typically the patient’s abdomen or thighs). Through this procedure, Dr. Cohen can refresh youthful fullness in the cheeks, around the eyes, or across the jawline. Many patients are pleased to learn that fat grafting has been proven to last longer than dermatological fillers.
