Breast Reduction Surgery in Great Neck and Manhattan
Though large breasts are generally considered desirable in our culture, there can be too much of a good thing. Breasts that are disproportionately large for a woman’s body can not only be unattractive, but can cause pain in the upper back and neck, and make it difficult to find clothing that fits well. Often, overly large breasts can also result in skin rashes under or between the breasts, and poor posture.
More than that, women with excessively large breasts frequently feel self-conscious and awkward, reluctant to exercise or dance in a public setting. While many women seek breast enlargement, more women than you might imagine seeking breast reduction, otherwise known as “reduction mammaplasty.”
If you are one of these women and live in Great Neck, anywhere in Nassau County, or in Manhattan, one of the very best plastic surgeons, Brian D. Cohen, M.D., is within easy reach. Working out of offices in Great Neck and Manhattan, Dr. Cohen has a well-earned reputation as a skilled surgeon and a caring person. Not only does he have fine credentials; he has a track record of remarkable success. Check out our website’s photo gallery and see for yourself.
What To Expect When You Have Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, so you will need someone to escort you to and from the procedure. You will see a major improvement to the appearance of your breasts immediately after surgery. Just remember that your breasts will look and feel better and better as the swelling and bruising abate. There will be some pain after the procedure, and there may be some numbness or sensitivity until you are fully recovered. Most people are able to return to work in about two weeks.
It is important to follow Dr. Cohen’s instructions during the month after surgery so that you don’t suffer any complications. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise and sexual activity until you are fully healed.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
While you are under anesthesia, Dr. Cohen will make an incision around each areola and down each breast, creating an opening through which he can remove excess breast tissue and skin in order to reduce the size of each breast. Using his aesthetic sensibility as well as his surgical skills, Dr. Cohen will reshape your breasts to maximize their beauty. You will have incision scars that will fade with time and the sense of well-being that follows making a truly positive change in your life.
When Breast Reduction Should Be Postponed
Though breast reduction surgery may be performed on a woman of any age, it is not recommended for those who:
- Have diabetes, heart problems, or other serious medical issues
- Cannot refrain from smoking before, during, and in the weeks after surgery
- Plans to lose weight (because this may change the size of the breasts)
- Plan to have children, since breast reduction surgery may make it difficult to breastfeed
Though breast reduction is a very safe procedure, it carries the same risks as other surgeries: excessive bleeding, infection, or an adverse reaction to the anesthesia.
Breast Reduction for Men
As many people are all too aware, men can also be troubled by excessive localized fat and/or glandular tissue in the breasts. The condition, known as gynecomastia, in which men develop what look like female breasts, is not as uncommon as you might think. As a matter of fact, almost half of the male population develops this condition. Most of the time, the cause of gynecomastia is unknown, though sometimes the problem is linked to certain medications or diseases. Because of the changes in male and female hormone levels during adolescence and old age, more males experience gynecomastia at these life stages.
If you are a man suffering the embarrassment of an “unmanly” chest, it is reassuring to know that a relatively minor surgical procedure can restore your masculine physique and your self-confidence. Dr. Cohen has made many male patients feel more comfortable in their own bodies.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Dr. Brian D. Cohen has two well-tested methods of male breast reduction surgery; which one he uses on you will be determined by the type and amount of excess tissue he discovers in your chest:
- If your excessive tissue is mostly fatty, he will use liposuction to suction out fat through a small incision in your nipple or under your arm
- If you have too much glandular tissue, he will excise it through a somewhat larger incision
Breast reduction surgery is typically an outpatient procedure. It is important to note that you will need someone to escort you to and from the surgical site.
Recovery from Male Breast Reduction
In most cases, recovery after male breast reduction surgery is a smooth process, made easier by seeing that your appearance is already much improved. You can expect to experience swelling and discomfort for a few days, though pain medication and compression garments will help. As soon as you feel up to it, you will be able to return to work (assuming your job does not involve heavy lifting or strenuous activity), but you will have to avoid sexual activity and arduous exercise for three weeks while your chest heals.
Most of our male patients come away very pleased with the results of their breast reduction. Their flatter, more defined chest will last for years as long as they keep their weight under control.
