When you think of cosmetic surgery, you might imagine a bandaged woman relaxing in a posh New York loft, waiting for her recent procedure to heal. Or perhaps you picture an actress or female celebrity discussing her breast augmentation or nose job with a talk show host. While it’s true that women have been going under the knife for cosmetic reasons for years – and more recently began discussing their experiences publicly – you might be surprised to learn that men are also opting for treatments at high rates. Recall that episode of Modern Family where Jay has Botox (and tries to keep it secret from his wife and kids)? Yep, average Joes are seeking modifications, too.
We regularly see male patients in our practice. While their reasoning is sometimes connected to aging, relationship changes, career choices, or changes in weight, overall, their needs are vast and varied. Mostly, they want to feel comfortable with the way that they look. Society places an emphasis on appearance, and men are not immune to those pressures. From the boardroom to the runway, men are often in the spotlight. And even when they are confident on the inside, having an outward appearance that reflects that inner strength can go a distance for many men. So what procedures are popular?
Neck lifts
Sagging necks are the result of aging or weight loss and can cause bands on the neck and drooping skin. This can make some men feel like they look older than they actually are. In these situations, a neck lift can tighten and smooth out the impacted skin and can be paired with a facelift for optimal change. While the procedure involves a cervicoplasty to remove excess skin and a platysmaplasty to alter neck muscles, most are performed on an outpatient basis.
Breast reduction
Nearly half of all men have gynecomastia, a condition where fat and glandular tissue are localized in the breasts. While the cause is unknown, it can be linked to some medications and diseases. For many men, a male breast reduction is an option to reduce breast size – and many are taking it up. During the procedure, we’ll remove excess fat through liposuction. If glandular tissues is present, a surgical cutting of the fat might be a better option.
Liposuction and body contouring
There’s a reason liposuction is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S. – it sculpts the body by removing fat from stubborn areas, like the waist, buttocks, abdomen, and hips. Likewise, body contouring can tone and smooth these areas, especially after a significant weight loss. If excess fat or skin is leaving you feeling flabby, come in to discuss your options for toning.
Rhinoplasty
Facial features are an area of concern for many men, so nose jobs are another common procedure in our office. We see men who want to modify their nose shape to ensure that it is proportionate in size to their other facial features. Others are concerned by imperfections like asymmetry, humps, and depressions.
Everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin – including men. If you’re a man wondering about your cosmetic surgery options, don’t hesitate to call or stop in to talk.
